Shamanism

Is a term to describe the ancient tribal practices of communities around the world. They had a way of life more in tune with the cosmos, earth, the seasons, the animals and everything in nature including communication with other realities.  Particular people became healers, seers, medicine people for the tribe and they would use their abilities to expand their awareness and through trance states ‘journey’ to different dimensions of reality to commune with spirit beings. They would bring guidance back to help serve their people and community. Information on how to bring healing, plant recipes, protection or answers to questions such as where are the herds of animals were to hunt. They also worked with the help of spirit animals called power animals they would be given details of ceremonies, rituals or offerings that would need to be made. Dance, chanting sound, drums, rattles, smudge smoke, planet medicine and reading the messages in nature were all part of the shaman stools and spiritual practice. This way of living/working is still alive today in the 21st Century. Many ancient teachings from different tribes have been revealed and shared. As people search for a more harmonious way of living.

Soul Loss/ soul retrieval

The concept of Soul Loss is one that we can all understand in relation to the meaning of feeling discounted, being fragmented after experiencing upsetting or traumatic events. Shamans understand that parts of our ‘energy’ or soul can leave our physical body for different reasons. Though we continue to live this splitting limits our ability to fill fully in the present or have a flourishing and abundant life. So a shaman would traditionally ‘journey’ to the source of the issue and bring back the energy part to be integrated with the client, this is called soul retrieval.

Journeying

In particular shamanic journeying gives us a structure of how to access the other worlds/realities. It also reawakens our spiritual connections our life force and offers a way to reconnect with parts of ourselves that have been disconnected and fragmented. We can empower ourselves by journeying with guides such as power animals eg. lion, tiger, mouse, butterfly etc and visit the other realms to meet spiritual teachers who will give us guidance or healing for ourselves or for others.

Ceremony

Ceremony and rituals are a part of the shamanic way of life. Daily spiritual practice helps to re-enforce connectivity to creation including honouring the spirits of nature, it also promotes harmony, mutual respect and balance.

Spirit Beings

Everything in nature in shamanism has energy and is considered a ‘being’ in a form that has consciousness, awareness and wisdom. The nature beings and the elements such as minerals, crystals, stones, trees, water, fire, air, flowers and the earth can be communicated with. Each is considered to have teachings/knowledge that can be shared if the shaman is able to show respect, honour and be judged by the spirit being as sincere in the desired connection. The different beings have particular traits and characteristics that can provide help, information and energy, for example stone people, they can help shamans by absorbing the energetic vibration of particular issues from clients.

Power or totem animals

Just like spirit beings the shamans view the energy of power animals to have particular traits and characteristics that can be helpful. For example calling on the energy of horse for a client, the power animal may have significant meaning to the client. Horse can be about bring strength, agility,  stamina, inner sense of power, it also could be bring the energy of freedom and the need to travel, journey in some way. Each animal has different qualities and energy which can be extremely powerful in helping someone heal or move forward in their life.
